Website Redesign

About the Client

The client is a leading expert in helping companies secure government funding and grants. Headquartered in Cambridge, with satellite offices in Vancouver and Ottawa, they have long been a recognized leader on the national stage.

The Client's Problem

Because the client has been in business for many decades, their website was built on older technologies that made updates and search engine optimization more difficult. Additionally, due to how long they had been operating their business, they had amassed hundreds of pages of content, some of which was current and some requiring updates due to the ever-changing nature of the government funding programs.

Our challenge was to update the site to look contemporary, move the site to a platform which was easier to manage content, keep track of the significant amount of content to be moved over, and allow the client’s team to easily make updates more efficiently.

The Process

As this was a significant task, we broke down the project into various self-contained components:

  • Migrating a php site to a WordPress site
  • Creating a detailed sitemap to organize the large amount of content and making it easy to navigate
  • Moving the content itself and categorizing the content appropriately
  • Creating custom post types for Funds, Newsletters, and Events, with tagging and organizing the content in a visitor-friendly way
  • Creating an updated, mobile-friendly design with best accessibility practices

One of the largest parts of this project was organizing 50+ fund information pages in the system, appropriately tagging them and having them sorted by importance in a navigation structure. With changing market conditions these weighted funds are easy to prioritize or deprioritize as they aren’t hard-coded into the navigation menus, and the site makes it easy to add and remove large areas without impacting the design or structure of the site. The funds additionally required sub-fund pages that were related to a fund, but needed to be in a separate navigation structure.

The Client's Results

We moved 500+ pages from the old platform to the new platform, collaborated with their team of subject matter experts to classify information and assess if it is up-to-date, and work with the team to ensure the new website looked fresh and vibrant while staying recognizable with their long-standing branding.
